Introduction

Bradford Metropolitan District Council is proposing changes to better manage traffic across Addingham village.

The Addingham Road Reclassification Scheme will include measures to reclassify a number of roads in the village that will help reduce congestion at busy periods. The proposals will also reduce air pollution by enabling traffic to move more freely and make it easier for pedestrians to travel through and around the village.

To address congestion and make the village more pedestrian-friendly, we are proposing to:

  • Upgrade Church Street, North Street and Bark Lane to B-roads to be the main route for traffic passing through the village.
  • Downgrade Silsden Road and Main Street to C-roads to make these roads, as the main shopping roads in the village, safer and more pedestrian-friendly.

The proposals would signpost traffic, currently heading through the village centre towards Bolton Abbey and beyond, away from the Main Street/Bolton Road junction area.

Although residential in nature, Church Street and Bark Lane are wider than roads through the centre of the village. They do not form a retail centre and therefore have a lower volume of pedestrian activity.

By shifting road users travelling through the village onto this new route, traffic levels in the centre of Addingham would be reduced. This would make it a safer and more pleasant place to be.

By changing the classification of these roads, it is anticipated that traffic can be better managed across the village.

We want to hear your views on these proposals. The engagement period will run from 22 March to 3 May 2024.

You can get involved by filling in our feedback form at the bottom of this web page, sending us an email, giving us a call or posting your feedback to the freepost address.

What measures are being proposed?

The Main Street/Bolton Road junction and road space in the centre of the village is too narrow to accommodate the current levels of traffic that use it. This not only causes congestion and higher levels of air pollution at this location but pedestrians have to navigate relatively narrow footpaths going between shops, bringing them into conflict with traffic.

The aim of the scheme is to address this conflict. By designating the new route as a B-road, vehicles following this route, to travel to and from Bolton Abbey and beyond, would no longer go through the centre of the village.

To tackle these issues, the following measures are being proposed:

  • Declassifying roads on the existing B6160 route to C-Roads, including:
    • Silsden Road, between A65 and Main Street
    • Main Street, between Skipton Road and Bolton Road
    • Bolton Road, between Main Street and Bark Lane
  • Classifying roads on the new B6160 route to B-Roads, including:
    • Bark Lane, up to North Street
    • North Street, between Bark Lane and Church Street
    • Church Street, between North Street and Main Street
    • Main Street, between Church Street and Addingham Wharfedale Road
  • The north-bound section of Bolton Road, starting from Bark Lane, will be unchanged
  • Tourist signage to Bolton Abbey will be changed to reflect the new B6160 route via the A65

With this new alternative route for the B6160, it would mean that road signage for traffic on the A65 would no longer direct people along Silsden Road and through Addingham village. In addition, sat navs would be less likely to direct people travelling to Bolton Abbey along this route.

Next steps

The engagement period will run for 4 weeks, from 22 March to 3 May 2024.

After the engagement period has ended, we will review and analyse the feedback we have received and decide if we need to make any changes to the scheme which we are proposing on this website.

Once a decision has been made on whether to implement the scheme as proposed on this website, or with some changes, we will send a letter to the community to let you know what has been decided and the next steps.
